Dr. MacDonald completed a Master’s degree in Nursing at the University of Toronto, Canada and a PhD at the University of Manchester in the UK. Currently she is a Professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of New Brunswick (Canada). Dr. MacDonald’s doctoral work examined respite for parents who were caring for children who required complex care. This paper comes from that work. Dr. MacDonald has three children of her own.

In this grounded theory study 40 English speaking women from a rural province of Canada were interviewed to learn about their experiences of returning to work after a depression. Women described getting back in the game as being difficult and challenging as they had not completely recovered by the time they returned to work. However, they felt compelled to return to work in order to keep their jobs, in order to resume health and social benefits, and to reinstate their wages. A number of themes emerged from the interview data. These included the presence of stigma, the active pursuit of silence, and battling adversity. Each of these core themes serves to describe the women’s experiences of returning to work. The women described wearing a mask or “putting on a face” to combat the stigma associated with their illness. In this presentation the three themes will be discussed along with a thorough description of wearing a mask. Strategies that employers can employ to ease the transition back to work will be discussed.

Dr.Olivia Catolico currently working as Professor in Department of Nursing, Dominican University of California and has a Faculty of Record for N4100 Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing. She has done her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from California State University, 1973, Masters of science in Nursing from Loma Linda University, 1986, Doctor of Pholosophy in Nursing from Hann School of Nursing and Health Sciences, University of San Diego, May,2005. She has around 30 research presentations and pulications.

Dr. Olivia Catolico Research Interest includes Healthcare Issues of Refugee and Immigrant women, Transcultural Nursing, Education Leadership, Vulnerable Populations.

Graduate in Nursing from the Lutheran University of Brazil (2006). His professional and academic career has always been focused on the areas of Education, Health and Social Care. As Guardianship Counselor in Alegrete Municipality developed the project every child in the State of RS Government School at the beginning of my professional career I worked as Assistant and nursing technician at Hospital Santa Casa de Porto Alegre and Sao Lucas Hospital, PUC-RS. In the Social Assistance Foundation and Citizenship in the city of Porto Alegre was manager of the Municipal Hostel, Coordinator of the Night Approach and Manager of Special Houses which meets all juvenile offenders referred by the Special Court. President of the RS Regional Nursing Council - a government agency 2012-1014. Currently serves as Nurse Care Hospital Santa Rita institution specialized in the treatment Oncology and Director of Establishment of Special RS Protection Foundation - FPERS. Main activities: Public Management, Education, Law and Nursing.

Kathi Rindahl is an assistant professor and lead faculty for the Community Health course at the School of Nursing at Fresno State University, in California. She is a nurse practitioner with passion for community health and wellbeing of underserved populations. Her clinical experience in these area includes 10 years as a migrant health nurse working on a mobile health unit, the same unit she currently uses for this project. In addition to teaching, Kathi also continues to practice as a nurse practitioner in an urgent care clinic in underserved area of Fresno.

Community Health

Mr. Cattell-Gordon has worked at UVA for over two decades. He helped design, develop and implement the cancer education, support and outreach programs for the University of Virginia Clinical Cancer Center. This included developing community-based programs such as the Every Women’s Life Health Passport which won the prestigious national Profiles in Progress Award. He left UVA in 2004 to serve as Associate Director of a large social service department where he led a successful effort to secure the 2007 Virginia US Senate Productivity and Quality Award. Cattell-Gordon returned to UVA in 2008 as a faculty member in the Division of Public Health Sciences and the School of Nursing. He directs the nationally recognized UVA Telemedicine program, oversees rural network development for the UVA Health System and is the co-founder of and senior advisor to the Healthy Appalachia Institute at UVA’s College at Wise, an Appalachian-based public health institute. He is currently working with key partners in far Southwest Virginia to help shape a strategic health planning process for the region. He is also helping develop tele-core, a resource capability using telehealth technologies to improve clinical outcomes and access to clinical trials. He is also a founder of the Virginia Institute of Autism, an applied behavioral school, support program and research organization

Lisa Quinones is a Professor of Nursing at Suffolk County Community College on Long Island. Born and raised of Puerto Rican born parents and raised in the tenements of the lower east side of Manhattan, she has been a registered nurse for the past 32 years, 17 of those as a dual certified advanced nurse practitioner in OB/GYN and Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. She is also certified as an International childbirth educator and a certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. She has been with SCCC since 1/99 and is presently tenured full professor where her work on the department level continuous to prosper with innovation and passion in teaching. The majority of her profession has been focused on the care of women's health primarily to the latino population in inner cities including Washington Heights in New York. She has worked for Planned Parenthood on Long Island and is presently and has been an outreach health consultatant for the national March of Dimes where she imparts perinatal education to latino women on eastern Long Island. She has been a volunteer brigade member and primary educator to the non profit organization Hope for a Healthier Humanity where she provides health education to "promotores" of health and nurses in Central America including El Salvador, Panama and Honduras and the Dominican Republic for the last 7 years. All are voluntary non paid ventures. She is presently Director of Curriculum for a “Water Project” assessing healthcare outcomes of a village where clean water will be introduced for the first time in the village of Divina Providencia, Honduras www.hopeforahealthierhumanity.org Her achievements include being recipient of the March of Dimes Woman of Distinction of Long Island in 2006 and presenter to the Panamerican Diaogue in Honduras which is comprised of members of the Central American archdiocese and Vatican. She addressed the United Nations focusing on the Millenium goals of Women and Children in the Dominican Republic, was the FIRST nurse educator ever to receive the Award for Nursing excellence through the Nassau/Suffolk Hospital Coalition, recipient of the Cherokee Comfort Inspiration award of 2011 as an advanced practice nurse and recently received a proclamation from District 13 and the entire county of Suffolk as Woman of distinction. She makes it one her proudest points to have graduates of SCCC accompany her on all travels abroad to experience the true essence of nursing in third world countries. Her biggest achievement however happened 11 years ago when she became a mother of triplets! She has become a voice for prematurity, autism and now International Nursing and the importance of world unity and solidarity! Oh yeah, AND she is a single mother of 14 yo triplets, 2 boys and a beautiful autistic daughter. Never a dull moment!

Dr. Rikabi has three years experience in teaching in the family nurse practitioner program with a focus on collaborative instructions. She also teaches joint injections. She has over 9 years’ experience as a family nurse practitioner with a focus on occupational medicine, HIV, women’s health, and orthopedic. She completed a doctoral degree in 2013, with a research focus on patient-centered care. Dr. Rikabi is currently an assistant professor at University of Southern Mississippi. She published articles on asymptomatic bacteriuria, dyslipidemia, and ethical issues in homeless people. She chaired and co-chaired the planning committee for four years for the Transcultural Nursing Society chapter Alabama-Mississippi-Louisiana. She serves on many academic committees, and as peer journals reviewer. Her research experience includes HIV, Dyslipidemia, and healthcare professionals practice with multicultural patients.
